Double Cup Triumph!

02 May 2008

More than 50 years since the last 2nd Division Double, this generation of players wrote their name in the history books, with a 5 - 1 demolition of Saundersfoot, in the 2nd Division Cup final.

The opening exchange was a very nervous affair, with Saundersfoot very much on top.  In fact, if Carl Wainright and Phil Jones had taken their chances early on, it might have been a very different story.  However, on the half hour mark, Kilgetty were awarded a penalty for a handball in the box and Nicky Cope stepped up to calmly slam the ball into the top right-hand corner of the net.

After this, you could see the Kilgetty players relax, and within ten minutes Nicky had doubled his tally with a brilliant individual goal, slipping past two defenders and beating the keeper at his near post. Kilgetty were 2-0 up at the break and looking comfortable.

Five minutes after the restart, and it was Saundersfoot who got the benefit of a soft penalty award. Dai got his hand to the spot-kick, but it just managed to squeeze into the goal. For a moment, It looked like Saundersfoot would get back into the game, but 20 minutes later, Jack Bevan lost his defender at a corner and drilled in a volley.  The score stood at 3-1, and now Kilgetty had the game by the scruff of the neck.

Saundersfoot’s anguish was made worse, when the keeper, who had looked nervous all night, bundled the ball into his own net and the night was rounded off when Geoff Marsh was first on to a threaded pass to get in behind the back four and cooly slot past the forlorn keeper.

The game finished at 5-1 and the celebrations went on into the night.

Kilgetty Ladies Win West Wales Cup Final

23 Apr 2008

Kilgetty AFC Ladies - west wales cup winners 2008

Back row from left to right: Kate, Amelda, Aimee, Claire, Kate, Joleen, Cally, Kirsty.
Front row from left to right: Emma, Audrey, Sadie, Kristin, Carrie, Alice, Stacey, Bethan

The Kilgetty Ladies team was formed at the beginning of the 2007/2008 season. Although they had not previously known each other, they immediately bonded and worked well as a team, all becoming good friends on the way.

Throughout the season they have improved game after game with great turn outs on training nights. Always putting a great deal of effort in to improve individually and as a squad, with plenty of laughs on the way.

Kilgetty’s great cup run came down to the final played at the Bridge Meadow Ground on a pitch that was in great condition, against a quality Haverfordwest County team. It proved to be a great 90 minutes of football played by both teams finishing 1 – 1. A fantastic Kilgetty goal came from some dynamic build up play, finishing with a goal placed in the top corner.

Extra time was much of the same great football with another goal scored for each team. And so, at the end of the match, with the final score at 2 – 2, it went to penalties. The atmosphere was tense, but the victory was sealed when Kilgetty won the penalty shoot out 3 – 2.

2nd Division Champions

22 Apr 2008

A 1-0 win over derby rivals Saundersfoot was enough to clinch the title at the Kingsmoor Ground.  Saundersfoot showed their physical side in an attempt to bully Kilgetty, but the boys in blue had enough class to edge them out.

Kilgetty and Saundersfoot will meet again on wednesday 23rd April for the 2nd Division Cup Final, which is set to be another tense afair.

Kilgetty U9s 2 v 1 Hundleton U9s

03 Mar 2008

P2160008.jpg

Saturday the 16th saw the under nines at home to Hundleton.

The last meeting between these two teams was decided by an own goal in Hundleton’s favour and this match also saw an own goal feature in the final result.

A tight match saw Hundleton take the lead in the first half but Kilgetty kept up their spirits and continued to exert pressure on the visitors. This pressure paid dividends as a, second half, Hundleton own goal put Kilgetty back in the game.

Shortly after, a burst forward from striker Oliver North saw him score the winning goal.

On the final whistle both players and fans were delighted with their second win of the season. All players showed equal determination and skill and so share the man of the match award.

Senior 1st Team Reach Cup Final!

19 Feb 2008

Two Goals from Copey, two from Geoff and one from Jack ensured that Kilgetty will be in the Second Division Cup Final in April.

Fishguard were completely overwhelmed by the dominance of Kilgetty, only managing a consolation goal with what was their only shot of the game.

If Saundersfoot get past Milford next weekend, in the other semi-final, we could be in for a showdown of titanic proportions.  The local rivalry between these two teams should make for a rip roaring, absolutely blimmin belter of a match.

Bring it on…

Prendergast Villa U9s 6 v 0 Kilgetty U9s

19 Feb 2008

The last two weeks have seen Kilgetty under 9s suffer two defeats.

The first at home to Tenby was not without its positives. In a previous meeting Tenby had put 13 goals past Kilgetty’s newly formed team but all those watching this rematch saw vast improvements as kilgetty limited the travelling side to 5 goals.

Alex Thomas, the man of the match, and the rest of the defence held up very well and often frustrated the Tenby attack.

Last weekend saw a depleted team travel to S.T.P to play Prendergast Villa. After holding Prendergast at 0 - 0 for the first 15 minutes, Prendergast eventually found a way through, just before the close of the first half.

The second half saw the home team attack in numbers and, despite two very good chances from Kilgetty on breakaway counter attacks, the game ended 6 -0 to the home side.

Narberth U9s 3 v 0 Kilgetty U9s

04 Feb 2008

Saturday the 26th saw Kilgetty under 9s travelling to Narberth.  Buoyed by success away to Solva in their last match the team’s spirits were high and the game was hard fought.

The final score of 3 – 0 to Narberth was in no way a reflection of the game with both sides having near equal possession of the ball.  The deadlock was broken just before half time when a goalmouth scramble, which including an excellent save by Harry Phillips, was eventually poked home from close range.

Kilgetty had their chances but Narberth saw off the attacks and completed their victory with two more goals in the second half.

Man of the match this week was Ross Williams for his dogged defending and surging runs out of defence to clear Kilgetty’s lines.
